IPOH, July 4 (Bernama) -- Two women were sentenced to 15 years in jail by the High Court today, after they pleaded guilty to alternative charges under Section 304(a) of the Penal Code for causing the death of a scrap metal dealer at a budget hotel here three years ago.

Judge Datuk Zainal Adzam Abdul Ghani ordered M. Sri Saraswathi, 31, and S.Piriyatarschini, 24, who were initially charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code, to serve the sentence from the date of their arrest on May 25 2010.

The duo pleaded guilty to jointly causing the death of B.B. Thangaraja, 38, at Dragon & Phoenix Hotel, Jalan Toh Puan Chah here on May 10 2010.

Their lawyer R. Sagaren pleaded for a lenient sentence and said," They don't have any prior criminal record. They have repented for their actions and saved the court time and cost by accepting the alternative charge."

However, deputy public prosecutor Aiza Khairuddin objected to the appeal saying both the accused had only pleaded guilty to the alternative charges after 11 witnesses had testified.
