KAHENGE, 14 MAY (NAMPA) - The All People’s Party (APP)’s leadership in Kavango East and West say they are unhappy that the Swapo-Party is renting offices belonging to the Ukwangali Traditional Authority.
The APP coordinator in the two regions, Mathew Wakudumo, said in an interview with Nampa on Wednesday that the Swapo-Party is ‘emotionally blackmailing’ supporters and sympathisers of other political parties by renting the Nkurenkuru offices, which are actually meant to serve all people, irrespective of their political affiliations.
He said president Hifikepunye Pohamba has on numerous occasions urged traditional authorities to distance themselves from political activities, but the fact that the ruling party is renting offices owned by the traditional authority goes against the president’s call.
“This is indirect, psychological intimidation of the supporters of other political parties,” charged the APP leader, adding that renting the offices creates the impression that the Ukwangali Traditional Authority is choosing sides as to which political party they support.
Approached for comment, the Swapo-Party coordinator for the Kavango West Region, David Hamutenya told this agency that the party opted to rent these offices because there are no other offices available for rent at Nkurenkuru.
He said there is nothing sinister about renting the offices as the ruling party promptly pays monthly rent of N.dollars 3 000 to the traditional authority for the three offices they rent.
Hamutenya added that the offices they are renting are still too small to accommodate all their staff members, adding that the Swapo-Party leadership for the newly-established Kavango West Region also does not have its own office as it was only elected recently.
He, however, indicated that the party has now secured land for the construction of an office at Nkurenkuru, which is the regional capital of Kavango West.
