KUALA LUMPUR, July 4 (Bernama) -- A member of Parliament today repeated the call for the abuse of ketum leaf to be placed under the Dangerous Drugs Act instead of the Poisons Act 1952 being used now.
Datuk Mohd Johari Baharom (BN-Kubang Pasu) said the call was made as ketum leaf addiction among youths in the country especially in the northern states was getting more serious as it also involved school children.
"While attending the Parent-Teachers Association meeting in my area, I was told pupils are now addicted to ketum drink to study and this is getting more serious, he said.
Mohd Johari was speaking in the debate on the royal address in the Dewan Rakyat.
He said the call to review all acts related to ketum to be placed under the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 had long been championed by various parties including anti-drug non-government organisations (NGO) and it was time for the government to act on the matter.

Mohd Johari's statement drew a comment from Datuk Takiyudin Hassan (PAS-Kota Bahru) who linked the increasing number of entertainment centres to facilitating drug trafficking in the community.
"If efforts to combat drugs were carried out while the number of entertainment centres was on the rise, how could the problem be resolved?" he said.
Clarifying the matter, Mohd Johari said drug abuse did not only take place at entertainment centres, in fact it was widely used by sailors and fishermen at sea.
In this regard, tackling the problem should not only be confined to specific locations, he said.
