OPUWO, 07 MAY (NAMPA) – The Opuwo Young Rangers Football Club scooped the N.dollars 5 000 first prize and a trophy in the Namibian Red Cross Society (NRCS)’s football tournament held here over the long weekend.
They beat Ondore Football Club by 4-0 in the final here on Monday.
The second NRCS tournament attracted 16 football teams from all over the Kunene Region.
The NRCS’s Regional Head, Kakarandua Mutambo told Nampa that the aim of the tournament was to create awareness amongst the youth about the NRCS, as well as to recruit new members in the process.
“On the other hand, it is also a form of collecting funds for the NRCS in the region,” she stated.
Mutambo said although they created awareness, nobody registered as a member of the organisation during the course of the tournament, as was expected.
The NRCS is a non-profit-making humanitarian organisation, which operates with volunteers in assisting with disaster management, humanitarian diplomacy, healthcare, organisational development and youth programmes.
The NRCS availed N.dollars 10 000 for the tournament, of which the winning team walked away with N.dollars 5 000.
Ondore pocketed N.dollars 3 000, while both teams which lost in the semi-finals each collected N.dollars 1 000.
According to the Red Cross youth’s chairperson for the Opuwo Constituency, Tuaonda Mbinge, they collected only N.dollars 400 from the tournament, unlike last year when they collected N.dollars 2 000.
Mbinge told Nampa that the amount decreased due to expenses which the organising committee incurred during the tournament, such as buying food for the administrators, buying footballs and paying for a sound system.
He added that they hope to make a lot of improvements for next year’s tournament, and also to collect more money and register more members during the event.
