PETALING JAYA, July 4 (Bernama) -- Eight Malaysian companies today sponsored a sum of RM510,000 to the community football centre called Cruyff Court Iskandar, developed by Iskandar Investment Bhd (IIB), the developer of Iskandar Malaysia.

Cruyff Court Iskandar, costing more than RM1 million, is the first Cruyff Court in Southeast Asia and is part of a worldwide initiative championed by the Johan Cruyff Foundation.

IIB President and Chief Executive Officer Datuk Syed Mohamed Syed Ibrahim said the fund would be used to organise a series of sports events at the centre and develop a football coaching clinic.

"The establishment of Cruyff Court Iskandar is one of IIB's most satisfying achievements, and we are delighted that these other companies are all showing their support.

"This court goes beyond the teaching of football skills, it provides real benefit by giving access to a platform for social assistance and community-building for children from underprivileged backgrounds," he told Bernama after announcing the sponsors today.

The eight sponsors are Sunway Group, Distinctive Group, WCT, UMLand, Mah Sing Group, MCT, Sunsuria and Tang Group, which are also involved in the transformation of Iskandar Malaysia, mainly in property development.

The court is established as a joint collaboration between the Johan Cruyff Foundation, IIB and Khazanah Nasional Bhd, and will enter new stage of development now that these corporate sponsors have come on board.

Deputy Chairman of Sunway Group Datuk Seri Razman Hashim said the group's participation in Cruyff Court was a befitting start to its next community effort in Iskandar Malaysia.

"It represents our ambition to make real our ideal in Johor that every child deserves an opportunity to a better future," he added.
