RUNDU, 30 APR (NAMPA) - The Kavango Regional Council (KRC) held a gala dinner on Wednesday to celebrate the victory of the region’s joint team at this year’s The Namibian Newspaper Cup.
This was the first time the Kavango regional under-20 football team, made up of players from both Kavango East and West regions won the annual newspaper cup since its inception 13 year ago.
During the gala dinner, a total of N.dollars 26 800 was pledged by various individuals and businesses.
Prime Minister Hage Geingob also pledged N.dollars 5 000 towards the team, while the local Sarasungu River Lodge promised to accommodate and provide free meals to the team for future competitions.
The KRC’s Chief Regional Officer (CRO), Sebastian Kantema who is also the patron of the team, said the team’s victory is historical, adding that nobody can ever take it away from them.
Kantema stated that they have reason to celebrate because they believed in themselves and their talent, and this is why they brought the cup home.
The CRO advised the regional team’s technical committee to start preparing for 2015, stressing that nothing will prevent them from retaining the cup.
“I urge every player to go for personal greatness, to see the future that few see and attain results that few get,” he said while urging the team to do away with self-doubt and to not question their dreams.
The Governor of the Kavango East Region, Dr Samuel Mbambo also congratulated the team for a job well done, saying the two Kavango regions have been occupying the top position for all the wrong reasons such as teenage pregnancies and poverty, for which the regions have been ranked first.
Mbambo underscored the importance of sports in changing lives economically and socially, noting that sports have become a profession, an occupation and a job-creator.
“Gone are the days when sports was just regarded as a leisure activity. Today, sports has become a great contributor to countries’ economies and has helped many countries develop,” the governor noted.
He also wants to see the two regions' business community supporting the regional U-17 football team which will be participating in the Scorpion Zinc tournament slated for August this year.
Mbambo made use of the opportunity to congratulate the Kavango region’s North-east First Division (NEFD) team, Julinho Sporting Football Club (FC) which has just gained promotion to the Namibia Premier League (NPL).
Julinho Sporting FC will now be joining two other teams from the two Kavango regions, Rundu Chiefs and United Stars, who are currently plying their trade in the NPL.
The gala dinner was attended by several local authority councillors from both Rundu and Nkurenkuru, as well as regional councillors from the Kavango East and West regions.
