WINDHOEK, 24 APR (NAMPA) – Four players have been selected by the Namibian Table Tennis Federation to represent Namibia at the 2014 World Team Table Tennis Championships in Japan from 28 April to 05 May this year.
They are Heiko Fleidl (captain), Fabian Tait, Reinhardt Stanley and junior player Darren Strauss.
Addressing the media in the capital at the Namibia Sports Commission (NSC) head office on Wednesday, Fleidl said it will be a long trip to Japan, but the Namibian players are well-prepared to win against their opponents.
“We are prepared to do better than what we did two years ago in Dortmund, Germany, because this time around, we have been picked to play against other minor countries, which we stand a chance of defeating,” he beamed.
Namibia has been drawn in the same group with Botswana, Zambia and Nepal.
More than 200 teams, consisting of 100 women’s teams and 121 men’s teams, from different countries will participate in the competition.
Speaking at the same event, Stanley, who participated in the World Table Tennis Championships in 2012, said they have now matured as players, and can participate in any world tournament.
“Nerves and inexperience were the main factors which played the main role in the past.
But after participating in a number of tournaments, we have now learned to make friends in the table tennis community, and we are now mentally prepared to play our opponents with the aim of enjoying the game while winning,” he enthused.
The Namibian Table Tennis team departs for Japan on Saturday morning.
