RUNDU, 24 APR (NAMPA) - The Kavango Regional Sports Council was revived in January this year after seven years of inactivity.
The previous sports council for this region was dissolved in 2007 by the line ministry after an undisclosed amount of money went missing from their account.
It was resurrected following the appointment of Erastus Someno as sports officer for the Kavango East Region in December last year by the Ministry of Youth, National Service, Sports and Culture.
Someno had then just returned from Cuba after studying sports science there for six years.
He told Nampa in an exclusive interview here on Thursday that the first thing he had to do when he assumed office was to revive the sports council for the two regions.
The absence of a sports council for the Kavango East and West regions had been blamed for retrogressive sports activities here, because there was nobody to support such activities.
The youthful Someno said the council will facilitate and support all sports codes and their activities in these two regions.
The sports council was established at an elective conference held in January this year.
Patrick Mukoya is now serving as the chairperson of the Kavango Regional Sports Council, deputised by Eveline Sikoka, while Dias Kamwanga is the treasurer and Gerry Hausiku the spokesperson.
Wilfred Haingura is the sole additional member of the council.
The absence of a sports council was really affecting the region, but with the council in place, things will now move in the right direction, said the sports officer.
The council is expected to work closely with the regional sports office in the quest to uplift the standard of sports in the region.
Someno attributed the recent success of the Kavango regional under-20 football team to the support and commitment of the newly- established sports council.
The combined Kavango regional under-20 football team scooped this years The Namibian Newspaper Cup, which was held in Tsumeb in the Oshikoto Region over the past Easter long weekend.
It is the first time that the Kavango Region won this cup.
