WINDHOEK, 23 APR (NAMPA) – The Law Reform and Development Commission (LRDC) will hold a stakeholders’ consultative workshop next Tuesday on the transformation of the Polytechnic of Namibia (PoN) into the University of Science and Technology.
The PoN received approval from Government to be transformed into the University of Science and Technology, and in line with the transformation the PoN need a new establishing Act which conforms to the requirements of the establishment.
LRDC chairperson Sacky Shanghala said in a media statement issued here on Wednesday the commission was approached to facilitate the review process and the drafting of the new law by virtue of its mandate provided by the LRDC Act, Act no 29 of 1992.
Pursuant to this legislative mandate, Shanghala said, the LRDC’s process of reform involves the consultation of stakeholders as well as the hosting of workshops and conferences to facilitate law reform.
The LRDC has thus prepared a discussion paper on the transformation of the PoN into the University of Science and Technology to be presented during the workshop on Tuesday.
A newsletter of the PoN published in March this year indicated that the Education Act will have to be amended to accommodate the change of name.
It also confirmed that the Bill is currently with the LRDC and will be up for public discussion later.
From there it will go to the National Assembly (NA) for amendment, then to the House of Review, the National Council (NC) and back to the NA before President Hifikepunye Pohamba signs it into an Act.
The Act will also have to be amended to change the titles of rector and vice-rector to chancellor and vice-chancellor.
