Hip-hop artist Jericho arrested for assault

WINDHOEK, 12 JUL (NAMPA) - Namibian hip-hop artist Jerome ?Jericho? Gawanab was arrested by the police on Wednesday in connection with the alleged assault of a man in Katutura last Friday (05 July 2013).
The 33-year-old Gawanab, winner of the 2011 Male Artist of The Year crown, made his first appearance in the Windhoek Magistrate's Court in Katutura on Friday on a charge of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm.
He appeared before Windhoek Magistrate Conchita Olivier, and his case was remanded until 22 August this year for further police investigations and to allow the accused to obtain the service of a private defence lawyer to defend him during future court proceedings.
Gawanab is free on bail of N.dollars 500, and his bail was also extended until his next court appearance.
He appeared in person, while Public Prosecutor Menencia Hinda handled the State's case.
A summary of substantial facts contained in the charge sheet indicated that Gawanab was arrested on 10 July this year, after he allegedly assaulted Windhoek resident Edward Snewe in Katutura last weekend.
According to the charge sheet, Gawanab allegedly and unlawful assaulted Snewe by kicking the victim on the head and all over the body.
In August 2011, Gawanab faced a similar offence after he was arrested by members of the Windhoek City Police and taken to the Windhoek Central Police Station where he was booked in for attacking his girlfriend Helena Ngaifiwa.
At the time, Deputy Commissioner Silvanus Nghishidimbwa, the Khomas Regional Crime Coordinator, confirmed to the media that a criminal case (WCR687/08/2011) was opened against the award-winning musician, in which he was also charged with assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm as well as malicious damage to property.
