Pick n Pay (PnP), a subsidiary of the Ohlthaver & List Group of Companies, the Namibia Red Cross Society (NRCS); and the Namibian Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) launched the “Namibians Helping Namibians” Campaign.

The campaign is a social welfare initiative by the abovementioned partners aimed at assisting vulnerable communities who are affected by the ravages of poverty, drought, cold weather conditions and the lack of nutritious food, amongst others.

The Secretary General of the NRCS, Dorkas Kapembe-Haiduwa said the mission of the Namibia Red Cross Society, is to help vulnerable people by mobilizing the power of humanity, and thanked the NBC and PnP for their support and commitment in achieving that.

“Namibia is prone to a variety of natural disasters like floods, droughts, veld fires, and human and animal disease outbreaks that can have devastating effects on our communities.  As we sit here today, almost 780,000 Namibians have been deemed severely or moderately food insecure – meaning they do not have adequate access to sufficient, safe, nutritious food - because of the drought that is ravaging our country”, said Kapembe-Haiduwa.

She further called on all Namibians to support the “Namibians Helping Namibians” campaign as a “unified response can save lives and help communities become more resilient”.

The NBC as official media partner will market the campaign through its various radio stations and television.

NBC Director-General, Albertus Aochamub says: “Fund-raising initiatives such as the one we are launching today, are not unique, but what stands out in this case is that all 10 NBC radio stations as well as NBC TV will run the campaign simultaneously, thereby reaching over 90 per cent of the country – something no other broadcaster can do, and which makes this a truly national effort to help our own suffering communities.”

The campaign is further supported by Pick n Pay who has placed collection boxes at its various stores throughout the country while at the same time encouraging its customers to support the drive.  The Managing Director of PnP, Henry Feris said: “As a proudly Namibian company, and part of the Ohlthaver & List Group - inspired by our purpose of ‘Creating a future, enhancing life’ – our appeal to all during this winter period, is to spare a thought for those who are not as privileged as some of us, and who may be deprived of a warm bed and a hearty meal.”

Feris said that people can make a difference by depositing food, clothing and blankets in the collection box at any Model Pick n Pay store in Namibia.

“With the assistance of the Red Cross and NBC, your contribution will reach those who need it most.  Come on – let’s share some warmth this winter and help a Namibian in need”, concluded Feris.
