WINDHOEK, 30 MAR (NAMPA) - Local boxer Sacky Shikukutu suffered a defeat in Newcastle in the United Kingdom on Saturday when he lost on points to Frankie Gavin.
Gavin had successfully defended his Commonwealth welterweight title.
A report on the Sky Sports website on Sunday said Gavin was knocked down for the first time in his professional career during the fight, but came through to clinch a wide unanimous decision.
Shikukutu sent Gavin to the canvas with a short left hand in the second round, but the UK boxer claimed after the fight that the knockdown was actually a slip.
Sky Sports reported that Shikukutu landed some decent shots in round three, but in the next round, Gavin had taken control of the fight again and did not let up for the rest of the 12-round fight.
Gavin was favoured by 117-111 and 118-109 twice on the three judges scorecards. He thus remains undefeated with 19 wins, while Shikukutu now has a record of 22 fights - 18 wins, three losses and one draw.
Gavin won the title from Denton Vassell last year on a technical knockout.
