OSHAKATI, 26 JUN (NAMPA) - The Oshakati Totem Exposition (Expo) will commence its 2013 activities on Thursday, and a total of 15 totem floats will feature in this second edition of the expo.
Spokesperson of the Oshakati Town Council, Jackson Muma told Nampa in an interview on Wednesday that the 2013 Totem Expo will kick off its activities with eight carnival-type floats parading from the council offices through certain streets of the town to the expo venue on the eastern side of the Yetu Shopping Centre.
On Friday, seven more floats will make a procession through the streets before Muma Prime Minister Hage Geingob officially opens the expo.
?All 15 totem groups will together take to the streets on Saturday morning to parade their respective floats through the town?s main street, starting from the Shali Garage in the western part of the town to the expo venue,? Muma said.
A totem is a being, object, or symbol representing an animal or plant which serves as an emblem of a group of people, such as a family, clan, group, lineage, or tribe, reminding them of their ancestry or mythic past.
The totem groups with the best and most-innovative floats will be awarded after Saturday?s street parade.
Muma noted that the number of the visitors of this year?s expo is expected to increase from more than 3 000 visitors last year.
Visitors of this year?s expo will see 19 small and medium entrepreneurs (SMEs) and corporate companies showcasing their products and services inside a provided tent, while 11 other SMEs and corporate business entities will display their products in an open space at the expo venue.
Food and drinks will be available from 40 kapana vendors during the course of the four-day 2013 Oshakati Totem Expo.
The participants of the expo are from different regions of the country.
?We are encouraging people to come to the expo to learn and experience the exciting part of our culture. The aim of the Totem Expo is to unit people from all corners of Namibia and to enhance our local tourism,? Muma stated.
The programme of the expo includes a beauty contest and live music performances by selected Namibian artists as from Thursday.
The 2013 Oshakati Totem Expo concludes its activities on Sunday.
