WINDHOEK, 16 MAR (NAMPA) - Taxi fares are expected to increase to N.dollars 10 on 01 April this year.
Namibia Bus and Taxi Association (Nabta) chairperson Pendapala Nakathingo told Nampa on Sunday an agreement was reached between the association and the Ministry of Works and Transport last week that taxi fares will increase to N.dollars 10 as from next month, while bus fares are also set to increase, but this will depend on the distance the buses travel.
Nakathingo however said the agreement is not final, although taxi fares will definitely increase from the current N.dollars 9 next month.
“We have come to an agreement that we can at least increase it by 10 per cent while negotiations continue, because there have been a lot of fuel increments,” he said.
Nakathingo indicated that during discussions on an increase, they also took the people who use public transport into consideration.
“We cannot just allow those that use public transport to dig deeper into their pockets. We also took into account that this is a public concern and we cannot just consider operators, but should also consider passengers,” he stated.
Earlier local media reports have indicated that the taxi fare will increase to N.dollars 13 this year, but Nakathingo said Nabta is the only body that has the mandate to increase the taxi fare.
He indicated that discussions on the increase will continue as from next month.
