OSHAKATI, 14 MAR (NAMPA) A policewoman stationed at Ongwediva was seriously injured Wednesday evening after she plunged her private vehicle into a water canal under the Sky Bridge near the Oshakati Police Station.
Although the accident was described as horrific by witnesses, the female police officer somehow managed to escape death but was seriously injured.
Her name had not been released at the time of writing.
She was admitted into the Oshakati Intermediate Hospital on Wednesday evening.
Some of her colleagues told Nampa on Thursday that the accident took place between 21h00 and 22h00.
She lives in Oshakati and she was on her way to the Ongwediva Police Station to report for night duty when she mysteriously lost control over her car, causing it to plunge into the water canal, her colleagues explained.
Two young men from nearby houses were the first to jump into the water canal to rescue the Police woman, helping her to get out of the sunken car.
Heavy duty towing machines of local businessman Ben Zaaruka were used to remove the severely damaged car from the water canal.
The Sky Bridge is known as a notorious accident site. Several people have, in the past, committed suicide by jumping from the top of that bridge into the flowing water underneath.
