Man in court for allegedly hacking grandmother to death

SIKONDO, 25 JUN (NAMPA) - The man who allegedly hacked his grandmother to death with an axe after accusing her of being a witch appeared in the Rundu Magistrate?s Court on Tuesday.
Hausiko Reino, 29, allegedly accused his 82-year-old grandmother, Aili Kandjimi of being a witch in the incident which occurred at Sikondo village situated some 20 kilometres (km) west of Rundu on Saturday.
?He assaulted her with a stick and later chopped her with an axe on the head. The pensioner died on the spot. The suspect then set her hut on fire,? Namibian Police Force (NamPol) spokesperson, Chief Inspector Kauna Shikwambi told a media briefing in the capital on Sunday.
During his brief court appearance, Rundu Magistrate Hellen Olaiya informed the accused of his legal rights to engage a legal representative of his choice. Reino was not asked to plead at this stage.
The magistrate then postponed the case to 20 August this year for further police investigations and to allow him to apply for legal aid.
Reino, who faces charges of murder, arson and violating a dead human body, read with domestic violence, was remanded in custody until his next court appearance.
The incident sent shockwaves through the Sikondo community.
