WINDHOEK, 25 JUN (NAMPA) - Namibia will join the rest of the world in commemorating International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking under the theme ?Make health your new high in life, not drugs? on Wednesday.
The day will be marked through various activities planned for the day which include door-to-door mobilisation against drugs and substance abuse, conferences and activities at schools such as poetry readings by Blue Cross Namibia, amongst other things.
A media statement issued by the Public Relations Officer of the Ministry of Health and Social Services, Este Paulus here on Tuesday said the current alcohol and drug situation in the country is a major public health concern, and the ministry is hard at work at strengthening and establishing more intervention programmes to address the harmful effects causes by this social evil.
The statement added that Namibia is not alone in the struggle against substance abuse as it is a worldwide pandemic that not only requires local and country interventions, but also international collaborative efforts.
According to Paulus, the Health Ministry along with its stakeholders is addressing the abuse of alcohol and drugs by strengthening the existing programmes and developing new interventions and policies.
?In particular, the ministry is seeking to empower communities to limit and prevent drug and alcohol abuse,? she stated.
