WALVIS BAY, 25 JUN (NAMPA) - The Minister of Youth, National Service, Sport and Culture, Jerry Ekandjo appointed nine sports commissioners to the Namibia Sports Commission (NSC) Board here on Friday.
The commissioners are Vivienne Katjiuongua (chairperson); Amos Shiyuka (vice chairperson); and Fabiam George; Penandino Kandjii; Monica Bohitile; Elize Petersen; Jesse Schickerling; Ndeulipula Hamutumwa; and Michael Hangula.
Speaking during the ceremony, Ekandjo indicated that it is important and relevant for all commissioners to fully grasp the provisions of the Sports Act, sports policies and other relevant laws, in order for sport in Namibia ?to grow in leaps and bounds?.
He mentioned that the commissioners were appointed on the basis of their ability and experience in sport and sports administration as per the provisions of Section 4(2) of the Namibia Sports Act, 2003 (Act No. 12 of 2003).
?One of the assignments of the commissioners is to root out undesirable tendencies hampering the development of sports in Namibia,? Ekandjo said.
He stated that this can be best achieved when commissioners have ?a deep understanding? and are ready to practically apply progressive measures which will take local sport forward, by using innovative ideas, laws, rules and regulations put in place.
Ekandjo further stated that discussions and interactions taking place within the commission should not just be ?business as usual?, but should be aimed at achieving milestones that will enhance sport for the greater good of the nation.
?Most pertinent to the business of the commission must be implementation. Discussions must have departure points that lead to tangible results,? he said.
The minister also added that his ministry is always ready to play its role, be it changes to policies, resource mobilisation, or complementing the efforts of the commission.
He therefore called on the commissioners to devise ways and means which will enable Namibia to move towards higher ground with regards to sport.
