WINDHOEK, 23 JUN(NAMPA) - A 29-year-old man was arrested by members of the Namibian Police Force (NamPol) at Sikondo village in the Kavango Region on Saturday after he allegedly hacked his grandmother to death with an axe.
NamPol spokesperson, Chief Inspector Kauna Shikwambi told a media briefing here on Sunday the deceased pensioner was identified as Aili Kandjimi, 82.
According to the police spokesperson, the suspect, who is the grandson of the deceased pensioner, reportedly accused the elderly woman of being a witch.
?He assaulted her with a stick and later chopped her with an axe on the head. The pensioner died on the spot. The suspect then set the hut on fire,? Shikwambi explained.
Kandjimi's next of kin have been informed of her death and the suspected killer is expected to appear in the Rundu Magistrate's Court on Monday morning.
The suspect will face a charge of murder and arson.
Meanwhile, in an unrelated incident, Leornardville resident Kittie Dames, 57, burned to death on Saturday at Farm Chamanodon in the Omaheke Region after a room she was sleeping in caught fire.
The fire is thought to have been caused by a candle which she forgot to put out before she went to sleep.
Police investigations continue, said Shikwambi.
