SWAKOPMUND, 22 JUN (NAMPA) - President Hifikepunye Pohamba has called on Swapo-Party members attending the party?s extra-ordinary congress to contribute robustly to the proceedings, and with unity of purpose.
About 500 party members are attending the extra-ordinary congress in Swakopmund in the Erongo Region aimed at discussing and adopting amendments to the party?s constitution.
?Our watchwords during our deliberations should be unity of purpose and a common vision for a better future for our party and our country,? said President Pohamba, who is also president of the Swapo-Party, during the official opening on Friday.
He noted that the proposed amendments to the party?s constitution dealing with issues such as 50/50 representation of men and women in party organs and structures, and the creation of new departments, are aimed at giving effect to the intentions of addressing the socio-economic challenges faced by the Namibian people, as well as streamlining the party?s operations.
?In the spirit of democracy and openness, we will use this opportunity to thoroughly interrogate these amendments and bring about outcomes that will endure and serve our party and its members not only in the present, but also in future,? said Pohamba.
He went on to say the constitutional amendments which will be discussed and adopted during the extra-ordinary congress remain firmly rooted in the principles that defined Swapo as a mass-based organisation more than 50 years ago.
?They also reflect our readiness to embrace change and the opportunities it brings about,? he stated.
The congress ends on Sunday.
