ONGWEDIVA, 04 MAR (NAMPA) – The Rally for Democracy and Progress (RDP)’s regional committee for the Oshana Region has resolved to retain Eino Heelu as the Regional Secretary for Information and Publicity until further notice.
The RDP Oshana regional committee made this decision during a meeting held here on Sunday.
The meeting was held to elect new leaders for the RDP’s regional portfolios, after some members of the regional leadership, including Heelu, were elected to serve as national leaders during the party’s second convention which took place in Windhoek in November last year.
Heelu was elected as a member of the national leadership last year, and he is to serve the opposition party as Secretary for Education and Training.
“As I have become one of the national leaders now, I was supposed to vacate my regional position for another comrade to take over, but the regional committee felt on Sunday that the time is not appropriate for a new person to take over,” Heelu told Nampa on Monday.
He said this decision was taken in view of the crucial Presidential and National Assembly elections that are due to take place in Namibia towards the end of this year.
Heelu was however the only exception, as the Oshana RDP regional committee meeting of Sunday went ahead and elected new regional leaders to replace the people who were elected to serve in national leadership positions.
Regional Deputy Secretary Nelson Katenda, Lebeus Hamata (Legal Affairs Secretary) and Penny Ndaitwah (Secretary for Women’s Affairs) have all been elected to positions in the national leadership and they had to surrender their regional portfolios.
Moses Gideon, who has been a member of the Oshana RDP regional committee since 2011, was elected as the new deputy secretary replacing Katenda, while the RDP’s Councillor in the Oshakati Town Council Ronny Petrus took over the reins from Hamata.
Former RDP Secretary for the Economic Development, Liina Nakaambo was elected to take over from Ndaitwah, and she (Nakaambo) is to be succeeded by Justine Hitoolwa.
Meanwhile, the RDP also appointed the former President of the Namibia National Teachers’ Union (NANTU), Ndapewa Nghipandulwa as the Chairperson of its National Leaders assigned to the Oshana Region.
Katenda, Johanna Dilu and Sacky Amenya are the other RDP national leaders who have also been assigned to the Oshana Region.
