WINDHOEK, 14 JUN (NAMPA) ? Members of the City Police caught Windhoek residents and visitors by surprise with a 'sting operation' around the central business district (CBD) on Friday morning.
The main targets of the operation were illegal vendors, jay walkers, illegal car washers and motorists who double-parked.
Over 30 City Police officers took part in the operation, and patrolled various streets in the CBD in three groups.
A public awareness campaign also formed part of the operation, during which leaflets containing activities of the City Police as well as safety tips were distributed.
Traffic offenders were fined on the spot, while other transgressors of minor offences such as selling sweets and mobile phone recharge vouchers at unauthorised spots were sternly warned.
According to City Police spokesperson Helena Mootseng, the main aim of the operation was to root out illegal activities which pose a threat to both Windhoek residents and visitors, to educate the nation on various aspects of national safety as well as the activities of the City Police.
Official statistics on the operation will be made known later on Friday.
