GOBABIS, 20 FEB (NAMPA) - An unidentified man allegedly stabbed his girlfriend several times in the chest after a quarrel at the Ovinjuru village in the Omaheke Region’s Epukiro Constituency on Wednesday.
The man, believed to be in his mid-thirties, allegedly committed suicide shortly after the incident by hanging himself from a tree.
The woman luckily survived the stabbing, and is currently receiving medical treatment at the Katutura State Hospital after being rushed there.
Her condition is, however, being described as critical.
No further information on the incident was available.
The Namibian Police Force (NamPol)’s Regional Commander for the Omaheke Region, Commissioner Josephat Abel confirmed the incident to Nampa on Thursday, saying the couple apparently got into a heated argument before the man allegedly drew a knife and stabbed his girlfriend in the chest and back.
Abel pleaded with the general public, in particular men, to work out the differences in their relationships in an amicable manner which does not involve the use of force.
He stated that the perpetrators of the recent spate of violence against women cannot go unpunished, as the long arm of the law will always catch up with them.
“I appeal to the public to never consider violence in settling their disputes in relationships. Men are supposed to protect women, not hurt them. We need to change our attitude henceforth,” he charged.
