OUTAPI, 17 FEB (NAMPA) - Tree minor children drowned between Friday and Sunday in the Omusati Region.
Spokesperson of the Namibian Police Force in that region, Warrant Officer Lineekela Shikongo told Nampa on Monday two of the children drowned in water ponds in the Oshikuku Constituency on Friday and Sunday, respectively.
Police identified these children as two-year-old Sabina Tashiya Shikongo, who drowned at the Okalumbi village on Friday, and Seblon Werner, 8, who drowned at Okagongo Kulaadhi on Sunday.
The two children reportedly left their respective homesteads with the intentions to join their older siblings who played in the field and/or looked after livestock.
The third child drowned in a water canal at the Ohambalanganga village near Outapi at about 16h00 on Saturday.
This child was identified as three-year-old Amutenya Naftal from the said village. His body was discovered by an employee of the Namibia Water Corporation (NamWater) who was busy cleaning that canal.
It is believed that the child went unnoticed as his other siblings were looking after livestock in the area.
“We appeal to parents in the region to take proper care of their small children, especially those between two and four years old by not allowing them to go out of the homesteads when there is nobody to look after them,” Shikongo stated.
