OTJIWARONGO, 13 FEB (NAMPA) – Colonel Nestor Shali Shalauda is the new Otjiwarongo Military Base Commander.
Shalauda replaces Brigadier-General Angunga David Shivute, who was posted to Russia on 01 February 2014 as Defence Attaché.
The handing over of command was conducted by Namibian Defence Force (NDF) Army Commander Major-General Thomas Hamunyela at the Otjiwarongo Military Base on Thursday.
The Otjiwarongo Military Base is also known as the 4 Artillery Brigade of the NDF since 1991.
Hamunyela said it is “not by coincidence” that Shalauda was appointed head of the Otjiwarongo Military Base, since he is one of its founding members.
Hamunyela said he expects Shalauda to uphold the culture of commanding, controlling and organising the military base here.
“Initiate plans and programmes aimed at enhancing operations at this army base, and you can be assured of my support,” said the Major-General.
Hamunyela also encouraged the soldiers at the Otjiwarongo Military Base to co-operate with Shalauda and give him the necessary assistance.
The NDF Army Commander said he expects to see all soldiers here continuing to build on teamwork and co-operation.
“Respect the NDF chain of command, and remain disciplined as a member of the NDF,” he said.
Shalauda thanked Hamunyela for the appointment, saying he will dedicate himself to improving the status of the military base and maintaining the good reputation it holds.
He warned all soldiers under him not to involve themselves in political activities, whether directly or indirectly.
“I am advising you to leave politics to politicians and to concentrate on our noble role of defending the territorial integrity of Namibia,” he said.
He also warned them against the dangers of tribalism, racism and gender discrimination.
The Chief of the Defence Force, Lieutenant-General John Mutwa and Otjozondjupa Regional Governor Samuel Nuujoma were amongst the dignitaries who witnessed the change of command.
