Lands Ministry officials verifying Mangetti farms

MANGETTI, 11 FEB (NAMPA) - The Ministry of Lands and Resettlement, in conjunction with the Ondonga Traditional Authority, started verifying the ownership of farms in the Oshikoto Region’s western Mangetti block this week.
The spokesperson of the Ondonga Traditional Authority, Joseph Asino told Nampa in an interview on Tuesday farmers in the western Mangetti block do not possess proper authorisation documents at this stage, and all of them will be issued with lease certificates after the verification.
It is hoped that the verification and issuing of lease certificates will, amongst other things, promote uniformity in Government and traditional authority service delivery to the Mangetti farmers.
The verification process started on Monday and will be concluded on 23 February.
The chairperson of the Mangetti Farmers’ Association (MFA), Ismael Shailemo is however not happy with the development.
Speaking to this news agency on Tuesday, he said the Ondonga Traditional Authority agreed to the verification process before proper consulting with farmers.
“They are supposed to thoroughly explain to us all details of the verification and to get our input before beginning the process,” he said.
Shailemo and other members of the MFA gathered at the western Mangetti block’s Okapya Agricultural Centre on Monday to meet with the ministry’s verification officials. Some 30 farmers gathered at the centre, but to their surprise nobody showed up to address them.
The MFA members alleged that previously, some application forms for leasehold certificates were detected which were mistakenly submitted to the authorities while bearing the names of the wrong people – in some cases cattle herders.
“Farmers are eager to discuss this issue to prevent the issuing of lease certificates to the wrong people,” Shailemo said.
